What is the Varna koota?
Varna is the first of the eight Ashtakoot factors, worth 1 guna. It compares the class (Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra) of the partners' Moon signs to assess ego and temperament.
The point is given when the groom's Varna is equal to or higher than the bride's — a traditional rule rather than a social judgment.
