Kundali — frequently asked questions
Kundali
What is a Kundali (birth chart)?
A Kundali, or Janma Kundali, is a Vedic birth chart that maps the positions of the planets, the Moon's nakshatra and the rising sign (Lagna) at your exact moment and place of birth. It is the foundation of every Vedic astrology reading.
Is the Kundali generator really free?
Yes. Generating your complete Vedic birth chart on RishiAstro is completely free — no sign-up and no payment. You can also download the full chart as a PDF.
What details do I need to generate my Kundali?
Your date of birth, exact time of birth and place of birth. The birth time matters because the Lagna (ascendant) and house positions shift roughly every two hours.
What is the difference between North Indian and South Indian charts?
They are two visual styles for the same astrological data. The North Indian chart is diamond-shaped with fixed houses, while the South Indian chart is square with fixed signs. RishiAstro generates both from your birth details.
Which ayanamsa does RishiAstro use?
By default we use the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard in Indian Vedic astrology. You can also switch to Raman or KP (Krishnamurti) before generating your chart.
What is a Dasha period?
A Dasha is a planetary time-period in the Vimshottari system that shows which planet governs a phase of your life. Your Kundali includes your full Vimshottari Dasha timeline.
Matchmaking
What is Kundali Matchmaking (Gun Milan)?
Kundali Matchmaking, or Gun Milan, is the traditional Vedic method of checking marriage compatibility between two people by comparing their birth charts across eight kootas (factors) for a combined score out of 36 gunas.
How many gunas are needed for a good match?
Out of a maximum of 36 gunas, a score of 18 or above is generally considered acceptable, and 24 to 32 is regarded as a very good match. A score below 18 is traditionally seen as unfavourable.
What are the eight kootas (Ashtakoot)?
The eight kootas are Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi. Each measures a different dimension of compatibility and carries its own points toward the 36-guna total. RishiAstro shows a koota-by-koota breakdown.
What is Manglik (Kuja) dosha?
Manglik dosha occurs when Mars sits in certain houses of a birth chart and is considered in marriage matching. RishiAstro gives a graded Manglik reading for both partners and indicates whether it is balanced between them.
Is the matchmaking tool free?
Yes. The full Ashtakoot Gun Milan compatibility report and the Manglik analysis are completely free, with no account required.
What details do I need for matchmaking?
The date, exact time and place of birth for both the bride and the groom. Accurate birth times give the most reliable Gun Milan score and Manglik results.
