What is a Karana?
A karana is half of a tithi — there are 11 karanas that repeat to fill the lunar month, and they are the fifth limb of the Panchang.
Four are 'fixed' and seven 'movable'. Karanas are used in Muhurta to fine-tune the timing of activities.
